  • Dissertation Title: Transpacific Nationalism: The Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands Dispute and the Geopolitics of Chineseness, 1970s-present
  • Justin's dissertation examines the anti-Japan protest movement in the early 1970s known as the "Baodiao Movement." Largely led by Taiwanese and Hong Kong college students, protests took place primarily in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and major cities in the United States to condemn Japan's claim of sovereignty over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. His dissertation, drawing on sources in Chinese, English, and Japanese, assesses how global geopolitics of the 1960s and 1970s and the transpacific protest network of this movement helped shape the protesters' sense of Chinese identification.
