  • "We have made the Government Tremble," explores the relationship between gender, citizenship and politics before and during Guatemala’s internal conflict (1960-1996). Using archival evidence along with more than 30 oral histories in Spanish, K’iche’ Maya, and English, I examine the evolution of women’s political participation across diverse popular movements, highlighting the contributions of students, human rights activists, and members of revolutionary groups. I argue that women were key players in defining national politics, which illuminates the complex interplay between state power and citizenship.
